A convenience sample from an intervention study on FASD involved 87 caregivers of children aged 3-12. These caregivers detailed their children's Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) through the ACEs Questionnaire and behavior problems via the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI). A theoretical framework involving a three-factor structure of the ECBI—Oppositional Behavior, Attention Problems, and Conduct Problems—was investigated. The average agreement among caregivers concerned 310 (standard deviation 299) Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) reported for their children. The two most frequently cited ACE risk factors were living with a household member who had a mental health condition and living with one who had a substance use disorder. A greater overall frequency of children's behavioral intensity (per the intensity scale of the ECBI) was substantially linked to higher total ACE scores, but the same was not true for the ECBI's problem scale, which assesses caregiver perception of the behaviors as problematic. The TASSO-M20 device provides a means for self-collection of capillary blood from the upper arm, yielding improvements compared to the finger-stick method of blood collection. The intent of this study was to (1) validate the TASSO-M20 device's capability in measuring PEth, (2) describe the application of the TASSO-M20 for blood self-collection during a virtual intervention, and (3) analyze the longitudinal patterns of PEth, urinary ethyl glucuronide (uEtG), and self-reported alcohol consumption within a single participant.
PEth levels in blood samples, collected and dried on TASSO-M20 plugs, were compared to (1) liquid whole blood specimens (N=14) and (2) dried blood spots (DBS; N=23). In virtual interviews, a single participant engaged in contingency management reported their alcohol intake, urinalysis results (positive or negative, using a dip card cutoff of 300ng/mL), and self-collected blood samples for PEth levels using TASSO-M20 devices, all observed and documented over time. High-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry detection was used to evaluate PEth levels across both preparations.
A study examined the correlation between PEth concentrations in dried blood samples taken from TASSO-M20 plugs and those found in liquid whole blood specimens. The concentration spectrum spanned from 0 to 1700 ng/mL, with 14 samples participating in the analysis; the correlation (r) value was calculated from these measurements.
